Can you believe it?
It's time for Clue 3 of our autumn knit-along where we tackle the sleeves and add a professional finish to your handknit brioche sweater. This stage is where the garment shifts from “in progress” to something you can picture yourself wearing.
What You’ll Knit This Week
In Clue 3, you will work on your sleeve:
-
Return the held sleeve stitches to your needles.
-
Pick up stitches across the underarm to join the sleeve in the round.
-
Work brioche in the round with no shaping at first.
-
Add sleeve decreases towards the cuff.
-
Finish the sleeve with 1x1 ribbing and a Tubular Bind-Off for stretch and a clean edge. This creates a fuller sleeve that gathers neatly at the cuff.
-
Pick up stitches around the neckline and work a 1x1 ribbed neck edging.
-
Finish the neckline with a Tubular Bind-Off for a polished, flexible finish.
If you need to visualise this before you start, let me walk you through this clue:
When you start off this clue you'll be working the sleeves.
The held stitches are placed on a needle, and then stitches are picked up across the underarm. Initially, we will be working brioche in the round with no decreases. Decreases happen towards the end of the sleeve, and we will finish with one-by-one ribbing. This is then finished with a Tubular Bind-Off to give plenty of stretch. This creates a fuller sleeve with a gathered cuff.
After the sleeves are complete, we will pick up stitches around the neck opening to
work a one-by-one ribbed neck edging. This is finished with a Tubular Bind-Off also.

Tips & Modifications
You can make adjustments to the size of the sleeve by changing the number of stitches you pick up at the underarm. Remember that you need to keep the changes in multiples of 2 so that you can maintain your brioche pattern.
If you would like a snugger-fitting sleeve, you can begin working the increases further up the arm. This will make it a much slower decrease so that you have a more fitted sleeve style.
The one-by-one ribbing draws the cuff in a great deal. If you don’t want a snug cuff, you may want to either work fewer decreases or work some increases before you work the cuff. Alternatively you can also increase the needle size that you use.
