Welcome back to the 2025 Mystery Knit-Along!
With Clue 1 under our belts, we’re ready to build on that strong foundation and bring the Burren Shawl to life.
This week, we’re expanding both the size and complexity of the shawl so let’s dive into Clue 2 and see where this journey takes us.
Clue 2 Overview
In this section, the cables grow more intricate as we build on the work from Clue 1. The central Cable 2 evolves into Cable 3, which introduces increases at both sides for two new cables. From there, Cable 4 takes the design to a whole new level with its flowing, organic pattern.
By the end of this clue, you’ll have completed one repeat of Cable 4, started a second, and added Cable 5 at each edge to set up the next stage of the shawl. The design begins to take shape in a way that feels both structured and organic, echoing the rugged beauty of the Burren landscape.
Clue 2 Tips for Success
Tackling Increases for Cable 3:
The cables sound more complex than they are when writing them out. Each cable flows organically from one into the other. Similar to Clue 1, the increases for cable 3 can feel a little loose at first. Keep your stitches snug, and trust that the cable crossings will pull everything together.
As for the set-up of cable 1, we will again be working a large number of increases on
each end of cable 3 for our new cables. Take care to keep these as snug as possible, and remember that they will be tightened up as we begin the cable crosses. As you work it will become much easier to see how it all fits together.
Stay Organised:
Use plenty of stitch markers to keep track of your cables and repeats. Markers will help you maintain the correct stitch count, especially as the design becomes more complex. If you're in need of some we love these lockable stitch markers by The Knitting Barber.
Read the Design:
By now, the cables will start to flow naturally. Pay attention to how the stitches align as you work. Recognising the pattern will make it easier to spot mistakes early. If you're in need of a tutorial on how to read your knitting, there is one right here.
Customizing the Size:
Looking to introduce more cables to your shawl?
When you work Cable 5 at each end you could work two Cable 5 which will then flow into seven Cable 4 in Section 2 instead of five.
To work the shawl longer, you could also introduce another Cable 5 at each end as you work Cable 4 section two, and then work seven Cable 4 for an extra cable section.
Please note that both of these options will need a good deal more yarn.
