We’ve reached the final chapter of the 2025 Mystery Knit-Along!
This is where everything comes together. In this clue you'll find cables that flow seamlessly with the shawl’s edging, adding a touch of elegance.
Clue 3 Overview
Clue 3 focuses on adding the finishing touches to your shawl. First, you’ll work the top edging, a sleek 6-stitch rib knitted across the live stitches at the top edge. This creates a polished frame for the shawl.
Once the top is complete, it’s time for the full shawl edging. Picking up stitches along the yarnover edges, you’ll work a repeating lace pattern that forms a delicate lattice, complementing the bold cables in the main body.
Increases on each side of the tip ensure the triangular shape is maintained, giving your shawl a harmonious finish.
Clue 3 Tips for Success
Top Edging Adjustments
If the top edge feels too tight or too loose, modify the number of stitches worked to suit your tension. Use more sssk decreases if your edge is flaring or more ssk decreases if the edge is pulling in too much. Don’t worry if you mix up some of these decreases, they won’t have a significant impact on the final width if you miss or add one as you work.
If you would like a wider edge you can add multiples of four stitches and work more repeats of the two by two ribbing.
Lace Pattern
The Full Shawl Edging features a 4-row repeat. If you lose your place, look for the k2tog stitches from previous rows, they’re a great visual cue to keep your lace pattern on track.
Pick-Up Stitches
When picking up stitches along the edges, focus your yarnovers. Ensure that each side of the shawl have the same number of stitches to maintain symmetry.
Customize the Edging
If you’d like a more dramatic look, consider increasing the width of the Full Shawl Edging. Just remember, any changes will affect your yarn usage. However as you are at the very last stage it's a great time to maiximise your yarn usage.
When working the Full Shawl Edge it is easy to lose track of where you are. I found it very helpful to note that on my k2tog the first stitch I put my needle into was a k2tog.
As I began recognising this, I could easily spot if I got out of step in my lace repeats. If you changed the depth of your shawl you will have a different number of stitches to pick up on each side. The number of stitches doesn’t matter but do ensure that you have an even number of stitches on each side of your central stitch. Also ensure that you pick up and knit the same number of stitches on each side.
