Learn to Knit: Backwards Loop Cast-On Tutorial

Learn one of the most basic of all cast-ons, the Backward loop cast on.

This is useful for where you need to join between two live sets of stitches. It forms a loose cast on.

How to work at the start of your knitting, with work on left needle:

  1. Scoop yarn from behind with right index finger.
  2. Loop it around finger.
  3. Put resultant yarn loop on left needle.

If you are using this technique to join between two sets of live stitches, such as at the underarm area or across the base of a thumb you will begin with the working needle and yarn on the right side. I use the left hand to hold the needle in place while I use my right hand to create the loops.

You will begin putting needles on the right needle as follows:

  1. With needle on right side held with left hand, use right index finger to scoop loop of yarn from behind.
  2. Loop it around finger.
  3. Put resultant yarn loop on right needle.
